The Los Trancos Area covers a more remote section of Portola Valley with incredible views of rolling grasslands. Located at the southernmost part of Portola Valley, this tranquil community borders three sprawling open space preserves. Miles of hiking trails traverse the beautiful surrounding scenery. The Los Trancos Area is also close to Alpine Hills Tennis and Swim Club.
The Los Trancos Area is also known as the Alpine or Uplands section of Portola Valley. Homes here ascend the steep hillsides of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Rossotti’s Alpine Inn is a historic roadside restaurant and beer garden located just north of the Los Trancos Area on Alpine Road. This rustic eatery has been a fixture in Portola Valley since 1852, making it the second oldest continuously operating tavern in California. Visitors to the Alpine Inn can enjoy gourmet grass-fed Angus burgers and a wide choice of craft beers, wines, and cocktails at outdoor tables overlooking the Los Trancos Creek.
Roberts Market is another longtime fixture on Alpine Road, offering an upscale selection of specialty groceries, fresh produce, flowers, wines, spirits, and deli items.
In Portola Valley’s Hidden Valley Family Farm neighborhood, Parkside Grille serves oak oven pizzas and elevated Californian comfort cuisine prepared with high-quality locally sourced ingredients.
Homes in the Los Trancos Area are a short drive away from many more dining choices in the Ladera neighborhood of Central Portola Valley. Amigos Grill is a standout here for authentic Mexican cuisine paired with a fine selection of margaritas and tequilas. Things to Do
The Los Trancos Area is surrounded by three expansive open space preserves. The 1,400-acre Foothills Nature Preserve features miles of trails running through a diverse landscape of fields, streams, and rugged chaparrals. Foothills Nature Preserve also features a lake and lots of native wildlife. The smaller 274-acre Los Trancos Open Space Preserve consists of oak woodlands and rolling grassland knolls with views that stretch to the San Francisco skyline and across the SF Bay to Mount Diablo on clear days.
The 500-acre Coal Creek Preserve offers more trails and grassland ridges with mesmerizing views of the bay. Portola Valley contains a total of 35 miles of trails and footpaths. The 1,335-acre Windy Hill Preserve, closer to the center of Portola Valley, has trails running through fir, oak, and redwood forests to the preserve’s namesake open hilltop ridge. The strong winds at Windy Hill Preserve make it a popular spot for kite flying, hang gliding, and paragliding.
Other popular trails in the area include those ascending Coal Mine Ridge and the Audrey’s Way trail climbing Mindego Hill. The nearby Alpine Hills Tennis and Swimming Club offers more recreational opportunities with tennis leagues and clinics, swimming lessons and teams, and a comprehensive selection of fitness programs.
