Things to Do
Portola Valley is one of the best destinations in Silicon Valley for hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. 35 miles of trails and footpaths traverse the town. Residents also enjoy access to some of the area’s most beautiful open space preserves.
Extending across 1,335 acres of open grassland ridges, Windy Hill Preserve is visible from many points across the peninsula. As the name suggests, the preserve’s open hilltop setting leads to strong winds, which make this an ideal spot for kite flying. You can also obtain permits for hang gliding, paragliding, and remote control gliding at Windy Hill. Several trails extend through Windy Hill Preserve, providing stunning views across the peninsula.
Trails also ascend Coal Mine Ridge, moving through verdant forests to open meadows at the ridgetop. Audrey’s Way is another popular trail that ascends Mindego Hill from the Audrey C. Rust Commemorative Site on Alpine Road.
Several open space preserves at the southern end of Portola Valley include the expansive 1,400-acre Foothills Nature Preserve. Foothills’ unspoiled natural scenery includes a diverse landscape of fields, streams, chaparrals, and a lake. This preserve is also known for its abundant native wildlife.
